Losing Yourself After Having Kids

By Angry Mummy · 7 min read

You looked in the mirror and thought, who even is this? The person you used to be feels like someone you knew a long time ago. That grief is real.

Short answer

Losing your sense of self after having children is a real and common experience, not ingratitude. When so much of your time, body and identity gets absorbed into caring for others, the person you were can feel lost. Grieving her is valid, and you can find your way back to yourself in small, gradual ways without losing your love for your kids.

Nobody warns you that becoming a mum can feel like quietly disappearing. Your name becomes "mum." Your time, body, interests and spontaneity get absorbed into keeping small humans alive. And one day you realise you're not sure what you actually like any more, or who you'd be in a room with no children in it.

Why it happens

Motherhood, especially early on, asks you to pour almost everything into someone else. The hobbies, the career rhythm, the friendships, the version of you that had opinions about things other than nap schedules, they get crowded out. It's not that she's gone. It's that there's been no room for her.

It's grief, not ingratitude

You can be endlessly grateful for your children and still mourn the person you were before them. Naming that as grief matters, because guilt tells you you're ungrateful, and you're not. You're allowed to miss yourself.

Finding your way back

You don't go back to exactly who you were. You integrate her with who you're becoming. She's still in there.

When the loss feels total

If you feel completely numb, hopeless, or like you've vanished entirely rather than just stretched thin, that can be a sign of burnout or depression, and it's worth talking to your GP.

Common questions

Why do I feel like I've lost myself after having kids?

Because motherhood, especially early on, absorbs your time, body, interests and identity into caring for others. The hobbies, friendships and version of you that existed before get crowded out. She is not gone, there has just been no room for her.

Is it normal to grieve your old self after becoming a mum?

Yes. You can be deeply grateful for your children and still mourn who you were before them. Naming it as grief rather than ingratitude matters, because the guilt that says you are ungrateful is not telling the truth.

How do I find myself again after having children?

Start tiny with one thing that is purely yours and purely for pleasure, reconnect with an old thread like a song, hobby or friend, notice what lights you up now, and protect a sliver of identity-time as non-negotiable.

When is losing your identity a sign of something more serious?

If you feel completely numb, hopeless, or like you have vanished entirely rather than just stretched thin, that can be a sign of burnout or depression and is worth raising with your GP.
